rickit babe is everything okay? you’ve barely touched your pile of hundreds of elaborate projects you start but never finish
BacklistedPod News! Backlisted has just passed 4,000,000 listens. We are a podcast about (mostly) old books and we largely rely on word of mouth. So thank you if you’ve listened to the podcast or recommended it to others. We’re still here thanks to you. A, J, N & T x 🙏
@KYPBristol Lovely! Can’t quite figure out the viewpoint, but a lot’s changed over the years. pic.twitter.com/Ho2HkGJTK0
KYPBristol A beautiful little painting of Granby Hill, Clifton, looking out across the fields of Somerset beyond. It’s 200 years old, but is so fresh it could have been painted yesterday!

@BookwormVaught Could it be missing rhythm? Those sound like things I associate with writers with a strong rhythm. Can be easier to tell if it’s off when you read out loud.
@chubbybannister This may be A Sign, given that this is the second time that someone’s mentioned The Conversation today and it’s been on my “to watch” list for years.
@chubbybannister Does it appear behind you, spookily? Or is that only if you say it into a mirror?
jplarocque If you’re ever having a bad month, just remember that from Ellen Ripley’s perspective, Alien, Aliens, and Alien 3 took place over about six weeks.
@Rev_Magister @whocolour I was thinking just the same thing!

@SwanRiverPress Oh yeah. I do hope that physical media finds a way to survive but I also worry that that’s because I’m something of a dinosaur in my love of words printed on paper.
@SwanRiverPress Gotcha. The one I’m thinking of is an old and venerable traditional-model magazine that is somehow continuing in 2022.
@SwanRiverPress I subscribe to a magazine where I worry that this might happen. I’d happily voluntarily double my subscription to keep them going without sub fee. I wonder how many other people that might be true for?

@4r7hr It beat me. I got to the stage where I was cheating to find the answers and still didn’t understand why they were the answers. Well above my pay grade!

@4r7hr It’s proving somewhat challenging. #understatementoftheyear
@chubbybannister It’s so you can reach things at the top of the screen if you’re holding one-handed. You can turn it off in Settings->Accessibility->Touch->Reachability.
@HelloPalendrome Awww. I suppose it’s a testament to my social distancing skills that this is the first ANYTHING I’ve caught since before the first Covid lockdown. No snogs for Matt. (You’d think after a few years that being ill would have novelty value, but it really doesn’t..)
I’m spending the day feeling sorry for myself because I have my first good old-fashioned summer cold in many years, and also defrosting my freezer. So there’s excitement for you.
@chubbybannister On the plus side, they’re so rare it’s now worth £500. On the down side, considering inflation, £500 is now worth 25p. #winsomelosesome
@4r7hr It did seem extra fruity today.

@TimmoPower @KYPBristol Great question! On Google Maps you can see that some of them are still there, but not many. google.com/maps/@51.44371… I wonder if they were prone to leaking? I understand that happened with some bay roof designs.
@4r7hr Well done! I gave up on my last two yesterday and looked em up.

@AthanSpod My guess is that the peak volume is *already* actually quite high because of transient peaks (so simple normalisation doesn’t work.) That’s usually the story with non-pro voice recordings. Maybe there just aren’t enough good, free podcast production tools yet.
@AthanSpod Yeah. Needs dynamic range compression and normalising, at least. There used to be a tool called The Levelator you could point amateur podcast producers at that would try its best to work things out well, but I think it went away.
Working on my Edinburgh routine where I spend five minutes at the start of other comedians’ performances jumping up in front of them and asking the audience to allow cookies and sign up to a newsletter for 5% off their first three jokes.
@AthanSpod Ah, should have read this one first! Maybe not all boosting algorithms are created equal, though…
@AthanSpod Sadly not for Android, but the Overcast podcast player has a great feature (“Voice Boost”) where it dynamically levels the podcast audio stream. The programmer is a podcaster and knows how stuff should be levelled, too. Wonder if there’s a similar feature in an Android app?
