@delightfulrepas @lickedspoon This is often done slightly sneakily with a “web beacon” en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_beacon — each email has a picture loaded from the sender’s web server with a unique link, so the sender can tell you’re reading the mail when a request for that particular image hits their server.
